Election Day Freebies For Homeschoolers + Our Plan For Today!

Happy Election Day!

After we finish our reading and math lessons this morning we’ll be focusing on the election for the rest of the day (and night as we watch the results come in!)

Jody and I have put together lots of great resources to learn about our government and the election process so be sure to check out the Government & Elections Page if you would like some extra help in putting together some resources today.

Also, if you have your “I Voted” sticker you can get TONS of election day freebies (plus several coupons and great deals) today!

Here’s my plan for this afternoon:

1.  Watch the Schoolhouse Rock electoral college video (scroll down to the bottom of the link).
2.  Watch today’s free BrainPop video on voting.  (We actually have a subscription to BrainPop for the iPad.  It’s $6.99 a month but worth every penny in my opinion!  You can also just watch the daily free video when you download the free app!)
3.  Go through the Congress For Kids election process and spend a good amount of time talking about it this afternoon while my youngest takes a nap.
4.  Once Ryan gets home, take the kids with us to go vote!
5.  Watch the election coverage tonight with the kids and fill out this awesome Electoral College Tracking Map & Tally Sheet with the kids as the results come in. Also, when you print out the list to track the votes, it has the number of electoral votes for each state to the left of the state name!

What activities will you be doing with your kids today?

Dissect A Virtual Frog For FREE!

One of the parts of homeschooling that I’m NOT looking forward to is dissecting animals.

I think that I *could* handle it, but honestly I don’t really want to!

So I was excited to see that there’s a website called Froguts that you can buy a year’s subscription to for as low as $36 per year!

Once you pay, you will have access to a virtual dissection classroom for a frog, a squid, a starfish, a cow eye, an owl pellet, and a fetal pig.  Plus, they have a genetics lab too!

To get a feel for the program you can do a FREE virtual demo dissection of a frog.  The demo doesn’t have everything that the regular frog lesson has (that you’ll have access to once you pay) but I was really impressed with the amount of information in just the demo… not to mention the high quality!!

This is definitely something to check out!

30 Day Giving Challenge Week 1 – Giving My Time

Can you believe that it’s November already?! November 1st completely snuck up on me this year!

I am excited for the start of the holiday season (one of my favorite times of the year!), and I’m also excited to take part in the 4th annual 30-Day Giving Challenge!

What is the 30-Day Giving Challenge?

It’s a dedicated period of time where we work together to think of ways to bless our friends, families, neighbors, and strangers by making a conscious effort to give every day in November! And hopefully, those 30 days of practice will turn into habits for us and our children that will continue throughout the rest of the year! 🙂

So, today was Day 1 of the giving challenge (I’m a little late, but better late than never, right?) and the first thing that came to my mind when I decided to join the challenge was that I really need to be more diligent about giving my time.

  • Giving more of my “free time” to my kids. Just because we homeschool doesn’t mean that I automatically set aside the alone time that my kids need to talk about life.
  • Giving time to newer homeschool moms who are looking for help and encouragement.
  • Giving more time to develop friendships.
  • Giving more time to my husband to hang out in the evenings without electronic distractions.

In addition to the above things that I am wanting to work on in my life, I also plan to focus on using this month to reinforce with our children how much JOY they can receive by being active givers! It’s going to be a blast to plan with them each morning what we can do that day to bless others!

And just in case you’re not like me and would like a full-month schedule where you can plan out all of your giving activities ahead of time (schedules make me want to scream, so we’ll just wing it over here!) then check out this 30-Day Giving Challenge Printable Calendar!

So what giving activities are you planning to do with your kids this month?

Be sure to follow the 30 Day Giving Challenge on Facebook, Twitter, and our Pinterest board!

How To Learn Music Theory For FREE & Get Started Learning An Instrument For FREE!

Whether you want to supplement the music lessons that you pay for, add on some basic skills for a new instrument, or attempt to completely learn an instrument without taking lessons, there are a ton of great FREE music resources available for you!   In addition to the online resources on our Music page, I highly recommend checking out what your local library has to offer.

I wish I would have been pushed to learn more about music theory growing up!  I learned how to read piano music but came out with very little knowledge of how to make sense of music without the notes in front of me.

Our plan is to continue with piano and drums on our own (I’m teaching those with some online help), and add in guitar in a couple of years.  Our oldest has expressed some interest in the fiddle, and if that interest continues then that’s one that we will actually pay for lessons for!  🙂

You can easily find the free music resources page anytime from the navigation bar above when you hover your mouse over the word “Electives”.

FREE Lapbooking & Notebooking Resources!

We’ve added the Lapbooking & Notebooking page with TONS of great resources for finding free printables for lapbooking and notebooking as well as links to websites explaining exactly how to do it.

You can easily find the free lapbooking and notebooking resources page anytime from the navigation bar above when you hover your mouse over the word “Resources”.

I tried doing lapbooks when my kids were younger (5-6) and ended up doing much of the work myself.  But now that they are older they can do the work independently and it’s a nice little break for me (which is always nice!)  🙂
