Top 12 FREE Geography Apps for Kids!

Learning Geography used to be as basic as passing around a globe or pointing at a flat map on the wall. Don’t get me wrong, I love the aesthetic a globe gives a room and we use ours all the time. But these days, there is a wealth of other amazing resources available to help learners of every age master their geography skills. Here are twelve of the top FREE geography apps for kids. Please note that some are available only in the App Store OR Google Play while some are available in both. Read More

Free Printable Country Word Searches!

If you’re looking for creative ways to engage your children in geography, language, and culture, these printable country word searches from 123Homeschool4Me are a great way to do it!

Homeschooling is all about customization and flexibility, and these country word searches fit seamlessly into that philosophy. Here’s how you can maximize their potential in your homeschool classroom:

  1. Geography Lessons: Make geography come alive by introducing a new country through its word search. Identify its location on a map, discuss its neighbors, and explore its significance in global context.
  2. Cultural Immersion: Each country’s word search comes with relevant terms, landmarks, and cultural icons. Use these as a starting point for exploring the country’s customs, traditions, and way of life.
  3. Language Exploration: These word searches often include words in the country’s native language. Take this as an opportunity to introduce your children to new languages, even if it’s just a few basic words.
  4. Critical Thinking: As your children hunt for words within the grid, they’re honing their critical thinking skills. They’re learning to analyze patterns, differentiate between letters, and apply logic.
  5. Multidisciplinary Learning: Expand the learning experience by combining word searches with other subjects. Incorporate writing assignments, drawing activities, or even cooking recipes from the countries you explore.

Making It Personal

One of the beauties of homeschooling is tailoring education to your children’s interests. Involve them in the selection process – let them choose which country’s word search they want to explore next. This not only fosters independence but also ensures they’re genuinely engaged in the learning process.

After completing a word search, encourage your children to share what they’ve learned. It could be through a presentation, a creative project, or a simple conversation. This helps reinforce their understanding and communication skills.

The Best Games for Homeschoolers

Pin this post

I love games for homeschooling! Our fun time can also be learning time if we pick the right one. Sure, there are plenty of educational websites and apps for kids, and we’ve found them super helpful over the years. We’ve found some fantastic digital back-up for geography and math.

But sometimes it’s nice to turn off the screens and just sit around a board or card game. Some of my favorite childhood memories are playing card games with my family. I play some of those same card games to build memories with my children.  And if a game also happens to reinforce a learning skill or concept, then that’s a double win!

Besides the obvious benefits, playing games together also helps develop and hone social skills, like verbal communication, taking turns, and sharing. Games also help with cognitive and memory development.

This is what you might call a master list of educational games. All ages and skill levels are represented so there’s a little something for everyone.

FREE Autumn Unit Study: Science, Literature, Geography, and more!

Explore the wonders of Fall with your children with this FREE Autumn Unit Study! Science, geography, literature, and more!
Autumn evokes thoughts of crisp breezes and leaves changing colors.  Let’s celebrate with resources you can use to create your own Autumn Unit Study!

Science (Photosynthesis)

Why Leaves Change Color is a great resource for around 3rd grade and up. It explains in Q & A format why and how leaves change colors.

Biology for Kids also has a page about photosynthesis, along with other activities about plants.

The US Parks has a page where you can find out which colors are dominant in your state and when you are most likely to see them in the fall.

The NeoK12 site also has a lot of videos, quizzes, and other fun information on photosynthesis.

Science (Equinox)

Learn about the rotation of the earth from EarthSky. This website has real-life pictures of how sunlight falls on the earth during the spring & autumn equinoxes and solstices. If you scroll down the page linked above, you will find videos taken from space & put on YouTube by NASA.

Geography and Science

Learner.org has Journey North. This program introduces the three sets of investigations that are featured in the Journey North program: Seasonal Migrations, Plants and the Seasons, and Sunlight and the Seasons. This is an interactive website where students observe nature’s patters and report it to the database. Right now, students are tracking monarch butterflies and hummingbirds in their winter migration. Students continue to check this site until spring, when they watch the migration change direction to the north.

Agriculture and Math

Find out what your local harvest foods are. Once you know, you can find recipes for your favorite foods!

SeasonalRecipes.com will also tell you what is in season as well as provide recipes for using those items. Fall is a great time for teaching real-life math in the store (budgeting, couponing, etc.) and through baking!!  My kids always get excited about the days that we do math in the kitchen.  One of our family’s favorite fall recipes is Gluten Free Pumpkin Muffins. It uses canned pumpkin, but if you wanted to use a store-bought pie pumpkin, (get the smaller ones, not the ones used for Jack-o-Lanterns) you could make it into a memorable teaching unit. Here is a guide for how to cook a fresh pumpkin.

There are several autumn-themed math activities over at MathWire too!

Literature

Here are a few books that are great for the autumn theme and typically available to check out for FREE at your local library!

Here are the links to the books on Amazon so that you can read the reviews for each one…

Top Secret – John Reynolds Gardiner

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin – Margaret McNamara

From Seed to Pumpkin – Wendy Pfeffer

Johnny Appleseed – Reeve Lindbergh

Happy Autumn!
