Teaching Children About the Five Senses – Unit Study Resources

Teaching Children about the Five Senses Unit Study!
If you don’t know where to start with your preschool or kindergarten children, the “Five Senses” is an easy place to get your feet wet.  Here are some ideas for making memories while you go about your daily lessons.

Lapbook and Notebooking Resources

PBS [1] has several resources for teaching about senses. Also, here are some video links [2] from the Kratt Brothers!

There are lots of great ideas for making lapbooks and planning a unit from Rock-a-Bye Butterfly. [3]

Here’s a folding printable for a mini-booklet [4] on senses from KidZone.

Arts and Craft Links

There are several labels on Scribd [5] for identifying the 5 Senses. It’s free, but you do have to register.

Everything Preschool [6] has a list of very fun and not-too-hard art activities for preschoolers.

Activities and Games

Little Giraffes [7] has lots of fun ideas for demonstrating the senses.

Compare human senses to animal senses on this chart of amazing things about animal senses [8].

Play “Sound Bingo” [9] in the Homeschool Den at Parents.com.

Do a Nature Study [10] with your children!

YouTube and other Streaming Video Sources

This Video [11] is a melodic-mnemonic in that it is geared toward elementary level science students. You could use it for high school review if you wanted to!

Sing Along with Mr. R [12]on this video about the senses. The lyrics are on the page, too. Just click on the “Show More” button.

Library or Netflix DVDs

streaming on Netflix [13], only DVD. Some libraries carry it though.

Public Domain Books

Volume Four (Chapter 5) of Charlotte Mason’s Series [14] has several ideas for teaching the Five Senses. This series is full of good info for homeschooling in general.

Field Trip Ideas

I can’t think of a better field trip for using all 5 senses than a farm, especially one with food samples made with farm-grown products. You can check out Homeschool Buyers Co-op [15] for a list of Agricultural Field Trips in your area. Click on your region, then select Agricultural.

If you live near a Sweet’s Candy Factory, you might be able to get a tour. Here is one mom who shared her tour on her blog, Oatmeal Kisses [16].

Visit a florist or nursery to learn about the most fragrant plants and how you can plant your own fragrant garden. I love this idea that I saw on Pinterest the other day for a small toddler garden in the backyard [17]!

Visit a candle shop and smell the different fragrances or visit a place that actually makes candles.

Visit a music store to hear different instruments.
